WHAT WE DO

FUNCTIONAL AND ACADEMIC INTERVENTION

Initiated to mould students into self-confident, self-reliant and strong individuals, Satya Special School provides a platform to children to excel in Arts, Dance, Music, Yoga, Sports etc., along with a comprehensive rehabilitation programme covering Special Education and the necessary interventions.

The children are grouped based on the ability and chronological age into different levels such as Primary-I, Secondary, Prevocational-I and II. Functional Assessment Checklist for Programming (FACP) is the standard tool used in the school for Educational Assessment. We draw up Individual Education Programmes based on the need and ability of the child and implement them using various special education techniques. Any challenging behaviours of the child are also closely monitored and modified.

Periodic Psychological review of each child’s progress is done and a parents meeting is conducted every quarter. Based on the child’s progress, training is given in the following functional areas: Personal, Social, Academic, Occupational and Recreational.

Apart from periodic psychological assessments, Satya also emphasizes on providing specialty training in order to ensure social inclusion.

National Open Schooling

National Open School at Satya is a boon to parents of children with special needs as their children can continue school education and enter into higher education programmes in colleges in the future. Here the children study at their own pace and use the national schooling system to pass their exams taking away the pressure to excel and still ensure they have education to back them in the future lives outside of school.

(OBE- 1 TO 12TH STANDARD) was started at Satya to provide special needs children the flexibility to write examinations based on their capability. It also provides a number of vocational and community-oriented courses which are easier for the children to grasp. The children are given an option to choose their subject of interest and study. Children who were once considered misfits in mainstream schools now diligently study Painting, Data Entry, Home Science, Business Studies and English. 25 students since 2015 batch successfully cleared their subjects, achieving more than 60 percent scores. The traditional classroom teaching is combined with visual learning to help children understand and remember the subject.

After going through Functional Education, children have one more shot at mainstream education, through NIOS system of education, where they can avail of Satya’s academic support for NIOS and pass their 8th, 10th and 12th making them ready for formal education in a College, or diploma education. Children with non-academic abilities, can go into our Vocational training program, where they can learn paper quilling, wood work, baking or housekeeping among other options, and work towards financial independence through their vocational training.

Alternative Inclusive centre for Education

Alternative Inclusive centre for Education (AICE for Street children, school dropouts, orphans, children from disadvantage situation, Gypsy children and children with special needs). In this project the education system is not an ’age‘ specific curriculum but an ‘ability’ specific curriculum. For children with disadvantageous backgrounds this is a place of acceptance where their past or their background does not define them, leaving them to pursue their education without stigma.

Remedial Education

With low awareness and many schools without a special educator, these children go through their schooling as low performers or failures. Often since there are no clear evaluations up to Class 8, learning disability in children is often missed till these children are around 13-14 years old. With low awareness, as many schools are without a special educator, these children go through their schooling isolated, labelled or in some cases shunned.

Satya Special school partners with schools in and around Pondicherry to support them with remedial teaching classrooms bringing special education to these children supporting the children’s growth within the school.
